Battle Deaths

Last updated: 14 February 2011

The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) collects data on battle deaths—reported and codable deaths that are the direct result of combat between warring parties in a conflict. The majority of battle deaths will be combatants; however, civilians caught in the crossfire are also included.

The data presented here are ‘best estimates’ and provide a benchmark. It is very possible that there are more deaths than these statistics indicate, but it is unlikely that there are fewer. While the accuracy of estimates of battle deaths in any particular year can be contested, the UCDP’s estimates are sufficiently accurate to permit researchers to map broad trends.
